Position Purpose

Support the Train Driver in the secure and effective operation of various types of trains and locomotives (including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger services) to ensure that customer freight and cargo arrive at their destinations in optimal condition and on schedule, thereby enabling the organization to meet customer expectations.

Position Outputs

Report for duty at the assigned location and receive specific tasks for the shift duration.

Identify the locomotive that requires preparation.

  • Gather and position necessary equipment on the locomotive.
  • Inspect and replenish required equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the work area.
  • Assist in the startup of the locomotive as required and support locomotive brake tests.
  • Couple the locomotive.
  • Officially sign on duty.
  • Dispatch locomotives.

Prepare locomotives for operation.

  • Identify the locomotive that needs to be readied.
  • Gather and position necessary equipment on the locomotive.
  • Inspect and replenish required equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the work area.
  • Assist in the startup of locomotives as required.
  • Support locomotive brake tests.

Prepare communication devices.

• Acquire radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, or telemeters as necessary.
• Verify the functionality of communication devices.

Conduct pre-trip preparations for the locomotives and the entire train prior to departure to ensure compliance with roadworthiness, train operation regulations, and safety standards.

  • Attach or detach vehicles as per work orders in the absence of guard personnel.
    • Install telemeters where necessary.
    • Complete the vehicle list and vacuum form III. Install train indicators.
    • Inspect the train.
    • Conduct brake tests in collaboration with the train driver.

Carry out shunting operations in sidings and during transit according to instructions to promote safe working practices.

  • Obtain work orders.
  • Execute shunting, placing, or removing of trucks as specified in the work order.
  • Update the vehicle list.
  • Position and clear loaded or empty trucks at the siding.

Qualifications and Experience

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Completion of Grade 12 with a focus on pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Willingness to undergo regular medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments throughout the selection process and every 12 months thereafter.
  2. Verification of physical hearing, vision, mental fitness, and overall health through medical examinations and associated safety behavioral risk assessments.
  3. The operator must ensure that no employees under the age of 21 are permitted to perform Train driver or train control responsibilities (SANS 3000, par 6.2.6.8).

Minimum prerequisites for Trainee:

  1. The candidate must have a minimum height of 1.6 meters.
  2. Assessment of psychomotor abilities in accordance with Vienna Testing System (VTS) standards.
  3. Capability to lift and carry heavy objects.

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING:

  1. Candidates must be prepared to successfully complete both theoretical and practical training for Train Assistant duties to achieve certification for independent work as a Train Assistant.
  2. A commitment to obtaining a Train Assistant duties certificate (theoretical and practical) is required to work independently in this role.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidates must be ready to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments during the selection process and every 12 months.
  • Verification of physical, hearing, vision, and mental fitness through medical tests and related safety behavioral risk assessments is mandatory.
