Purpose of the Role
The purpose of this learnership is to prepare and train successful candidates to assist Train Drivers with the safe, secure, and efficient handling of various trains, including:
- Passenger trains
- Freight trains
- High-speed, heavy-haul, and airbrake/vacuum brake locomotives
The Train Assistant ensures that cargo and passengers are delivered safely and on time, maintaining the high standards of Transnet Freight Rail.
Key Responsibilities
As a Train Assistant Trainee, you will:
- Report for duty at the assigned location and receive a list of responsibilities for your shift
- Assist in the preparation and inspection of locomotives before departure to ensure safety and compliance
- Prepare and maintain communication equipment
- Carry out shunting activities in yards and sidings under supervision
- Support the Train Driver in the safe movement of the train across assigned routes
- Monitor and report any incidents, delays, or hazards along the journey
- Assist with basic administrative duties related to train operations
Minimum Requirements
To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate with Mathematics and/or Physical Science
- Must be 21 years or older as per rail operation safety standards
- Willing to undergo medical and fitness assessments including vision, hearing, and physical strength tests
- Able to lift and carry heavy objects as part of the job requirements
- Must successfully complete theoretical and practical training to qualify as a certified Train Assistant
- Be available and prepared for shift work, including nights, weekends, and public holidays
- Must undergo annual safety and medical evaluations
Training Includes:
- Locomotive preparation (diesel and electric)
- Safety and operational procedures
- Shunting and coupling/uncoupling of trains
- Communication systems and depot operations
- Understanding of train working rules and railway regulations
- Route knowledge including stations, sidings, and yard layouts
Key Competencies & Skills Required
- Strong communication and concentration skills
- Effective problem-solving ability
- Basic knowledge of railway safety standards (Health and Safety Act, BCEA, SANS 3000/3004)
- Time management and stress-handling abilities
- Capability to operate and prepare locomotives
- Familiarity with Transnet Freight Rail policies and procedures
