
Programme Overview and Application Guide
Admission Requirements
1. Senior Certificate (Pre-2008)
Applicants must have passed the following subjects with the indicated minimum symbols
- English (min HG symbol D or SG symbol C)
- Mathematics (min HG symbol E or SG symbol D)
- Biology and/or Physical Sciences (min HG symbol E or SG symbol D)
2. National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Higher Certificate Endorsement
Subjects and minimum rating codes:
- English: Level 4
- Mathematics: Level 3 or Mathematical Literacy: Level 6
- Life Sciences and/or Physical Sciences: Level 3
- Minimum APS: 19 (22 if Mathematical Literacy is used)
Note: Life Orientation is excluded from APS calculation.
3. National Certificate (Vocational)
Minimum rating codes required:
- English: Level 5
- Mathematics: Level 4 or Mathematical Literacy: Level 7
- Life Sciences and/or Physical Sciences: Level 4
- Minimum APS: 24 (27 if Mathematical Literacy is used)
Note: Life Orientation is excluded from APS calculation.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Applicants without the minimum academic requirements but with relevant healthcare experience may apply through the RPL route. The following are required:
- A valid Matric certificate (with Higher Certificate admission) or an old Senior Certificate with a D-aggregate (950 marks or more)
- 25 years of age or older
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA) or Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA)
- A minimum of 5 years’ operational experience in Emergency Medical Services
- Current employment in Emergency Medical Services
- Successful completion of both a theory and clinical assessment
Programme Duration
- 12 Months (Full-Time)
Programme Outcomes
- Equip graduates to provide emergency medical care within the Emergency Care Assistant scope of practice
- Eligible for registration with the HPCSA upon successful completion
Target Audience
- Grade 12 learners
- Current emergency care personnel
Tuition Format
- Full-time, outcome-based training
- Combines classroom learning, self-study, and practical training in both simulated and real clinical settings
- Supervision by qualified educators, doctors, nurses, and emergency care personnel

Selection Process
- Medical and physical fitness evaluations (guidelines available on the website)
- Minimum 40 hours of voluntary EMS duties recommended
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews and assessments
Academic Requirements
- Minimum 50% average per subject required for exam eligibility
- Must demonstrate competency in all theoretical, practical, and fitness assessments
- A 50% pass mark per module is required
- Failing a core Emergency Medical Care module will require retaking all such modules
- Failing non-clinical modules may still require clinical practice to maintain skills
- Supplementary exams allowed for qualifying students
- Clinical placements are arranged by Mediclinic
- No permanent night shift work allowed during the programme
- Students receive 12 days of sick leave per year (with valid medical certificates)
- Leave is aligned with the academic calendar
Student Commitments
- Students must maintain a portfolio of evidence showing clinical competence
- Prescribed and recommended textbooks must be purchased by the student
- External organisations sponsoring employees must pay in advance
- Bursary students must sign a contract agreeing to work back the programme duration
- If not successfully completed, the student will be liable for the full training cost
- Student information may be shared with authorities for compliance and B-BBEE reporting
