Overview
The City of Ekurhuleni is inviting suitable candidates to apply for temporary General Worker positions within the Rodent Control Programme, a community-focused initiative that supports environmental health improvement in targeted wards. These workers, referred to as Rodent Control Ambassadors, will assist in efforts to educate households on rodent control measures and support related public health campaigns.
This initiative is designed not only to reduce rodent infestations and improve sanitation in vulnerable areas but also to empower local residents by involving them directly in the health promotion of their own communities.

Key Responsibilities
As a General Worker in the Rodent Control Programme, your primary role will be to support public education and community mobilization efforts across your designated ward. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Community Education and Door-to-Door Outreach
- Conduct house-to-house visits in your assigned ward, ensuring at least 30 premises are visited per day.
- Provide residents with clear, accessible information about rodent control, sanitation practices, and other environmental health topics.
- Distribute educational pamphlets and materials during your visits.
Public Engagement and Mobilization
- Mobilize and encourage community members to attend educational campaigns, block meetings, and health awareness events.
- Conduct health talks in small group settings to raise awareness and share best practices regarding pest control and hygiene.
Surveys and Data Collection
- Record all premises visited using the provided data collection tools.
- Log the number of pamphlets distributed and the number of infested premises identified during your visits.
- Maintain detailed records of follow-up visits and outcomes to assess program effectiveness.
Collaboration and Reporting
- Report directly to the Environmental Health Practitioner assigned to your ward.
- Provide regular feedback on your activities, including identified rodent-infested properties and any community concerns raised during visits.
- Network with other Rodent Control Ambassadors and Environmental Health staff to align efforts and share insights.
Campaign Support and Administration
- Assist in the management of attendance registers during block meetings, health talks, and public campaigns.
- Ensure daily attendance and participation are properly logged on the official register.
- Support the Environmental Health team with any additional tasks related to the Rodent Control Programme as requested.
Minimum Requirements
To be eligible for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualification: Minimum of Grade 10 or equivalent.
- Residency: Must be a resident of Ekurhuleni and live in the ward where the work will be conducted. (Proof of residence is required – e.g., a utility bill, affidavit, or letter from the ward councillor.)
This is a ward-based employment opportunity, and applicants will only be considered for placement within the communities they reside in. This ensures a stronger understanding of local challenges and promotes community trust.
