Overview

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) is recruiting dedicated and community-oriented individuals to serve as Fieldworkers for various nationwide data collection initiatives. These are temporary contract positions designed to support Stats SA’s ongoing mission to gather accurate and timely socio-economic and demographic data that shapes public policy, planning, and development in South Africa.

Fieldworkers will operate primarily within their own communities, engaging directly with households to collect critical data for national surveys. This role is vital in helping the government understand living conditions, employment, income, health, education, and more. Key Responsibilities

As a Fieldworker, you will be entrusted with the important task of collecting accurate, real-time data from households in your assigned area. Your core duties will include:

Data Collection

  • Conduct door-to-door interviews with residents in the designated community area using a Stats SA-provided mobile device.
  • Collect detailed information on various socio-economic topics in line with the survey or census requirements.
  • Capture all responses electronically using mobile data collection tools, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

Community Engagement

  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse range of people across all demographics and cultures.
  • Clearly explain the purpose of the survey and how the information will be used, addressing any questions or concerns from participants.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor at all times to build community trust and cooperation.

Reporting and Accountability

  • Meet daily targets for the number of household visits and completed interviews.
  • Perform data quality checks before submission to ensure all information is recorded correctly.
  • Submit data within required timelines using designated systems and protocols.
  • Return all assigned materials, including mobile devices, at the conclusion of the contract.

Training and Compliance

  • Attend mandatory training sessions prior to deployment to understand survey protocols, interview techniques, and data system usage.
  • Follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) as instructed by team leaders or supervisors.
  • Adhere to all confidentiality and ethical standards, safeguarding the privacy of all participants.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for a Fieldworker position with Stats SA, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Senior Certificate (Matric) or an equivalent qualification is required.
  • Proficiency in at least one of South Africa’s 11 official languages; additional language skills are a bonus.
  • Must be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID document.
  • Must have a clear criminal record – background checks will be conducted.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Skills and Competencies

We are looking for candidates who possess the following personal and technical abilities:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to speak clearly and confidently during interviews.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to operate a mobile device or tablet for data collection.
  • A driver’s license is an added advantage, though not mandatory, especially for those covering wider or rural areas.
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to handle sensitive topics with discretion and professionalism.
  • Good time management skills and a strong sense of responsibility.
